Using a reliable lye calculator is an essential in soap making, whether you are using Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide. A Lye calculator allows you to experiment with your oil combinations and weights to ensure that your soap has the correct amount of oil. A good lye calculator will allow for your superfatting and the different properties of your chosen oils. I work in metric, so I prefer Lye calculators that allow for both imperial and metric measurements.

It includes information on soap qualities and the fatty acid make-up of oils. It also allows you to choose your water and superfat amounts. Each section of the tool has a click-able number that provides helpful information. Majestic Mountain Sage: I like the look of this lye calculator. It is easy to use. This calculator measures in grams, ounces and pounds and works for both Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide. It has fixed liquid and superfat amounts. Australian Soap Maker: this calculator works in both grams and ounces and also for Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide. It downloadable with Excel so that you can work offline, which is very handy. Natural Soap Boutique Calculator: I like the look and layout of this calculator. It is a basic calculator for cold process soap making however, it only uses ounces which is limiting for those of us who use metric. Cranberry Lane: this is a basic beginners calculator for cold process soap making. You can measure in ounces or grams and has fixed water and superfat amounts. Suds N' Scents: a basic calculator for cold process soap making. Calculates in grams or ounces and has fixed water and superfat amounts. Summer Bee Meadow: this calculates for both liquid and bar soaps but only uses ounces. |
