rose water & tandoori Soap

Rose Water and Tandoori Soap

This soap was an experiment and so I was not expecting such a good result! I went to my local Indian Grocers and on an impulse bought a bottle of clear Rose Water and some Tandoori Food Colour just to see what it would be like in a soap. I used the Rose Water as my base and the Tandoori colour for my colour. I must admit that my intention was to create a white and rose-coloured soap...I was not expecting such a vibrant orange colour!! But it is a beautiful vibrant orange. This makes a lovely hard bar of soap.
Note: The Rose fragrance from the Rose Water did not remain after the curing period. You will need to add essential oil if you require fragrance.

Before you begin, ensure that you have all your safety measures in place: gloves on, eye protection, long-sleeved shirt, feet covered, no small children or pets in your work space and be in a well ventilated area.

You Will Need:
  • 500 g of Coconut Oil
  • 300 g of Olive Oil
  • 200 g of Sunflower Oil
  • 330 g of Rose water
  • 151.320 g of Lye (3% discount)
  • Tandoori Food colour

Yields - 1481 g of soap. About 11/2 Kilos of soap

Method
1. Ensure your Rose Water is very cold/or even frozen and mushy. This helps it it remain its fragrance during the addition of Lye.

2. Put your Rose Water under the exhaust fan and pour your Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) into the rose water...never pour the liquid into the lye!

3. Allow your lye mixture to cool down

4. Using some oil from your Oil allowance mix 1 tsp of tandoori colour and ensure that the colour and oil is well blended. One tsp will give a very vibrant colour as seen in the pics.

4.  Weigh out your oils using a digital scale and place in a plastic or stainless steel bowl. All measurements are by weight not volume.

5. Gently pour your lye mixture into the oils and stir with a long-handled wooden spoon or stainless steel spoon. Ensure the Lye and oils are mixed well before you use your stick.

6. Blend with your hand-held blender until a medium trace (your mixture will look like a thick pouring custard).

7. Divide your mixture into two: pour  half into a jug and keep the other half in the bowl.

8.  Add your tandoori colour to the mixture in the bowl and mix gently.

9. Visually divide your mould in half lengthways or you can use a divider if you have one.

10. Pour the orange colour down one side lengthwise and the white down the other lengthwise. The mixture should not run into each other too much as it is at a medium trace and not to runny.

11. Fill up the mould and then with a chopstick or the end of a spoon, swirl the two sides together.

12. Leave until the next day and un-mould and cut.
